Coupon Codes

One BIG way to save money when you purchase things online is by using coupon codes. Many people either don’t know enough about coupon codes to bother, or think it’s not worth the time. I can tell you from experience that it IS certainly worth 5 min tops to find a coupon code that could save you a LOT of money. When you are making any purchase through a website, if during the checkout process you see anywhere to enter a promotion code, coupon code, or anything similar, then congratulations, you have the opportunity to save some money on this purchase. If, for example, your buying a book from Barnes and Noble.com just go to google, do a search for “barnes and noble coupon code” and look through what comes up. Then if you think you have a valid code (most sites that list coupon codes, also list an expiration date), enter it into your order page, and it will either show your discount, or tell you the code is not valid (in which case try another one, or better luck next time). Some websites allow you to “stack” coupon codes, although there are less and less of them these days. What I mean by “stacking” coupon codes is some sites will allow you to enter one code, submit it, then if you enter another one if you have it, to get even more money off your purchase.

Just a couple of popular sites that I use when looking for coupon codes are:

RetailMeNot

CouponCabin

but like I said, you also have a decent chance at finding a code just by googling it.

FREE Movie Screenings

It’s a LOT easier then people think to see FREE movies BEFORE they come out. There are many ways to win passes via Radio Stations, Website giveaways, Theatre giveaways etc…

But this about how to get the passes without having to win them.

There is a website called
Wild About Movies that is somewhat difficult to navigate, but often has information on free screenings in your area. Up until recently you could print passes directly from links on this site. A few screenings may still be that way, however, recently the FREE movie screening gods have for the most part switched over to GoFoBo. Just go to gofobo and type in your zip code, every screening in that area will come up. When you select the screening you want, one of two things can happen.

1. It may say something to the effect of, this screening is full, please use a gofobo rsvp code or try another screening.

2. It may say passes available Click here to print passes.

If it asks you for a gofobo rsvp code. I have had some luck with just doing a google search. For example if I’m looking for Shutter Island passes for Boston, just google Shutter Island Boston gofobo code. A few times I have lucked out and gotten a code for certain movies. However occasionally if you get the code, they may not have any passes left, so it’s hit or miss. The most passes you can get at once is 2, so if you plan on going in a group, call your friends immediately and have them get passes asap, they do go quick, especially if you don’t need a code.

The MOST important part of all this is if you do manage to get passes, you MUST arrive early. The passes are on a first come, first serve basis. They always give out more passes then necessary and most shows fill up QUICK! I arrived at my most recent screening an hour and a half early and the theatre was mostly full, I ended up sitting in the way back, which I hate, but hey it’s FREE. I have heard stories of people arriving 2 hours early, seeing lines around the corner and not being able to get in. So I suppose the best thing you can do is judge your arrival time based on how popular of a movie you suspect it will be.

I have also been able to score an occasional pass here or there by just googling “free movie screenings” and trying a couple of sites that come up. Just be mindful of sites that try to get you to sign up for free trials, and sites that may not be legit etc…

Happy Hunting!

Restaurant Reward Programs

The following is a list of Restaurant Reward Programs that you may be unaware of. If you dine at these places a lot, or even every on a somewhat regular basis, I highly suggest signing up. Many of them have rewards/freebies just for signing up. Signing up is free and all you have to do is present your rewards card when you're paying your bill. I'll list all the ones I'm aware of: *$1=1 point unless otherwise noted.

Papa Gino's/Dangelo's is a fairly new program, but has by far the best sign up bonus. Just for signing up you get a FREE small pizza, and a FREE small sub. Even if you never plan to eat at this place ever again, why not just sign up and get your free pizza and sub? As if that's not enough, you also get 25 Points to start off with (50 points gets you $5 Off).

Just the other day I ordered a small sub for the gf, and a medium sub for myself. I had a coupon for $1 off a medium. I was able to use my free sub, and the coupon. So dinner cost just $6 that night!

Subway has no bonus for signing up but here's what your points get you...

10 Points = 1 Cookie
15 Points = 1 Bag of Chips
20 Points = 21 oz. Drink
35 Points = Mini Sub
50 Points = Regular 6” Sub or Wrap
75 Points = Regular Foot-Long Sub or Salad

TGI Fridays gives you a FREE Appetizer just for signing up. So again... even if you hardly ever go, next time you do just sign up and use your free app.

Spend $100 get an $8 coupon.... not that great, but if you eat there often... better then nothing.

Qdoba gives you FREE homemade chips and salsa on your next visit. Their program is a little different. Here's how it works:

A full-priced entrée (usually $5 or more) is worth 100 points. So after purchasing 10 entrées worth 100 points each, your 11th entrée will be free. In some markets, a full-price entrée (usually $5 or more) is worth 84 points, so after purchasing 12 entrées worth 84 points each, your 13th entrée will be free.

D'Ann's a Great Sports Bar in Abington,MA supposedly give you $10 FREE for signing up though I never got mine and never followed up on it. But anyway, they do have a good program:

200 points =$20 ($1 spent=1 point)

Tuesday is DOUBLE points day ($1 spent =2 points) so in theory if you just go on tuesday, $100 spent will you earn you $20. Points add up quick when you're drinking with friends....

Maximizing Your use of the Entertainment Book. (Cheap Lux Level Movie Tickets & More)

I thought I would post a few ways I try to maximize my savings when it comes to the Entertainment Book. In case you don't know what the entertainment book is, its a huge book full of local coupons. Depending on when/how you get it, it usually pays for itself after a couple of uses.

The book itself, when it first comes out, cost about $35 for the Boston area. If you wait a couple of weeks (it usually first comes out around November) you can get the book even cheaper. For example as I'm writing this, you can purchase the Boston book for 35% off, just $22.75. If you want to wait another month or two its usually around $15 or so... but then of course you lose 2 or 3 months you could have been saving. The biggest way to maximize your
purchase of the book itself is to use a site like Ebates, My Points, or Cashbaq in combination with the lower book price.

As far as maximizing the coupons in the book. I think one of the best deals is to use the National Amusements Showcase Cinema coupons. This coupon allows you to get a regular movie ticket anytime for $7 . Which, if you normally go to an evening show is a savings of $3.75 per ticket. But, to get the best use of these coupons, is to use them for $7 off the price of a Lux Level seat. The regular cost of a lux level seat is $21.75 which I would never pay just to see a movie, but maybe that's just me. But at $7 off you get a ticket for $14.75, what makes this worth it is, you get a $5 voucher toward concessions, essentially bringing the total cost of the ticket down to a whopping $9.75, yes that's right, a cushy, RESERVED for you, lux level seat, RESERVED parking, $5 in concessions, and a waiter for $1 less then a regular ticket. That's what makes it all worth it. That, and you can get beer/alcohol in the lux level.

One might argue that they never buy any food at the movies, so the $5 in concessions means nothing. Well in that case, your getting a comfortable reserved seat and reserved parking for $3 more then a regular ticket. Which, to me is also worth it, considering the lack of decent parking at the theatre. Plus, the fact that you don't have to arrive early, and you have plenty of room to yourself in the lux level.

Keeping in mind that, like anything else, your only really saving with these coupons if it's something you would do anyway, here's another way to maximize a coupon in this book. The book has a LOT of "Buy 1 Dinner, Get 1 Free", coupons. The best way, in my opinion, to use these coupons is for you and whomever your with, to "treat" yourselves to one of the more expensive items on the menu that you would like, but wouldn't normally get at the regular price.
This way you end up with, (hopefully) an expensive meal, for the two of you, at the same price or (in my experience) cheaper, then you would have paid if you didn't have a coupon.

Another useful tip for this book is to sell the coupons you will never use on ebay, or craigslist. The key to selling them on ebay though is to mention that "your not selling the coupon itself, your selling the time it takes you to clip and mail the coupon". Otherwise your against ebay's policies. The easiest thing to do with coupons you won't use though, is to trade them with someone, on a site like
Swap Savers.

Make Lots of Extra Money with Focus Groups

Welcome

I'm going to start off my initial post with something I've told many people about at one point or another. It's an extremely easy way to earn some extra cash. Some companies pay you cash, some pay you check, but nevertheless money is money.

Heres a small list of some groups I have been in and the money I received.

Played Xbox Unreleased Game 2hrs: $210

Sampled Unreleased Vodka 75minutes: $75

Talked about 401k's 2hrs: $110

To get started is simple, I'll provide a list of links at the end of this post. Just go to each site and enter your information. It won't be sold to telemarketers or third parties or anything of the sort, and it may take about 5 minutes of your time, but I assure you it IS worth it. Many of you have asked me for these links before and have never followed through for one reason or another (you know who you are). Again, trust me, you can thank me once that first check is in your hand after sampling vodka, playing video games for an hour, or talking about beer. I know, I know, I can't believe they pay you to do this stuff either. I can't possibly make this any easier for everyone so I hope you sign up. Though i realize I am creating compettition for myself here, but I digress, I'm here to help....

There are a few things to remember here:

1. First and foremost: They call you and/or email you surveys which you MUST reply too or call them back in order to qualify.

2. This is obvious but if you don't give them the answers they are looking for you won't qualify. There's a science to telling them what they want to hear, which I have acquired over time, but I'll save that for a later post.

3. Once selected (in some cases you have to call them the day before or day of to confirm) you MUST show up on time NO EXCEPTIONS. In fact they ask that you show up 15 minutes early but as long as you get there BEFORE the start time your ok. If your late, your out of luck.

Side note here: Every place I have done one for in Boston, reimburses you for parking too. (In case you were looking for an excuse not to do it)

4. There's two potentials for Bonus money here as well.

One is if you show up early, some companies enter you into a drawing to receive extra money at the end of the focus group.

The other is they ALWAYS take more than they need, for example if a company only needs 10 participants they will call.... say 12 people. If all 12 show up, 2 people get sent home with a paycheck for doing NOTHING, let me rephrase that in case your still unsure about signing up.

YOU COULD POTENTIALLY GET PAID TO JUST SHOW UP AND PICKUP A CHECK!! (Really people, how much easier can it be)

Granted that maybe a rare occurance, but, if, say, all 12 people show up, well then your odds of taking home a check without doing anything are 2 in 12. I'll take those odds over the lottery any day! On more little hint here, if they EVER ask before they call names "Who just wants to go home" or anything of the sort, you better jump up and say I do as fast as you possibly can. This happened to me once and I was sent home.... with a paycheck.... for doing... that's right...NOTHING.

My personal record for being sent home... paid... without doing anything: 3!

5. Another rule of thumb here is you can only do one focus group every 6 months, whether it is with the same company or not, it doesn't matter. One of the first questions they ask you when your are "qualifying" is " Have you done a focus group in the last 6 months?" or "When is the last time you did a focus group". So again, you can only do one every 6 months.... but here's a tip, they don't communicate with one another, they go by your word, so you better be honest here, because we wouldn't want you to be earning easy money 2 or 3 or more times in a 6 month period now would we?

One last thing, in case for some unknown reason your still procrastinating about signing up, you get free lunch/dinner (in the form of wraps usually) and drinks. What more can you ask for people.

So, I won't badger you any longer, your on your own. I hope you actually go through with it this time. I'm signed up for all of these, but I've placed them in the order of ones I have actually received some sort of communication from and have actually done groups with. Here's the links:

http://boston.craigslist.org/etc/
I frequently reply to ads for companies I have already signed up for on craigslist and it HAS triggered a call from them to qualify me. I think it helps a good deal to check this one out regularly.
